Overview of the Country

With a population of 41 million, Tanzania is situated in Eastern Africa, bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda and Burundi to the west, and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the east. The name Tanzania derives from the names of the two states, Tanganyika and Zanzibar that united in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. Relative size of country is slightly more than twice the size of the state of California or approximately four times the size of Britain.

The climate is mainly tropical. The country has considerable wildlife including the Serengeti plains.

The country is a democracy and the recent reforms are transforming it into a market based economic system. The key economic activity is agriculture.

Overview of health & health system

Like most places, the Government is the main provider of health services, but the private sector, both for profit and non-government, also serve a significant proportion of the population. Government run services tend to be not well maintained and there is shortage of medical equipments and medication; generally resources are extremely limited. The private hospitals have a higher standard of care. Placements tend to be in private mission hospitals or government run hospitals, typically teaching hospitals.

Healthcare be described as poor, with 118 in 1000 children dying before the age of five. AIDS and Malaria remain huge burdens on the health system. Malaria exists all through the year and 1.4 million of the population is living with HIV/AIDS.
