Successful Remote Learning Tips

It's already mid-year! Can you imagine?

With the new reality of online classes  being convenient for many people,  it's wise to forge ways to strengthen your current habits and approaches to online learning. Advances in tech and disruptions such as covid-19 have led to integration of virtual learning (and internships) into traditional classrooms.

As you already know, remote learning comes with a couple of challenges. It requires  dedication, focus, time management skills, self-discipline and strong motivation.

The pros are you can learn whenever, wherever, and however works best for you; balancing work and family commitments.

Remote Learning

Besides having reliable internet access and having a journal make sure you get the most value out of your next class by observing the online learning  tips listed below:

1. Treat an online course like a “real” course.

Remote learning comes with too much flexibility and freedom and it is easy to get distracted. Find ways to optimize your learning by setting aside time for learning, building a study plan, tracking deadlines and minimizing distractions such as social media, television and  house chores.

2. Hold yourself accountable.
Have deadlines and track your goals. Without a professor around to monitor your progress, you will need self responsibility. You can also pair up with a classmate or friend as your accountability partner.

3. Eliminate distractions.
Have a dedicated study space or a regular study space and stay organized. Simple hacks such as dressing up for a normal class will help your mind create a formal studying environment.

4. Actively participate and ask for help when you need it
Ask follow-up questions when need be, join a social network group where you can discuss what you’ve learned, create virtual study groups with your classmates and always keep your instructor informed.

Participating in online discussions will help you stay motivated.

5. Understand online learning objectives, goals and expectations.
At the start of the course, note down what you want to accomplish by the end of it. Always have that preceding your notes and read them before you start every class. This will guide you and act as guardrails throughout the course.

6. Self care
Keep your mind and body healthy. This includes your sitting position, having a comfortable chair and study table, taking study  breaks, resting, exercising, stretching, staying hydrated, healthy eating and getting enough sleep.
